Bollywood filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has often left the audience enthralled with his beautiful story-telling. From Rockstar to Highway, the filmmaker has extensively worked with musician AR Rahman to make sure that the music of his films connects will all his viewers irrespective of their age. As the fans awaited the release of their next film Chamkila, based on the real-life experiences of late musician Amar Singh Chamkila, AR Rahman sat down with SpotboyE and exclusively spoke to us about his experience of working on the film. Starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in lead roles, he revealed that the actors sang live on the stage as the makers had set up bands for them.

When asked about the name of the film as opposed to the heartwrenching story of Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur, he said that is based on storytelling. Talking about the lead pair of the film, who are also singers in real life, AR Rahman was asked is composing songs for them was easy. He explained that the movie centers around two singers who got shot, it was necessary to have actors who could really sing. He added, “They sang live. We had a band prepared for them. They were recorded live and then the recordings were cleaned up. During the scenes they are singing, they are talking and the only way to do that is to shoot it live. Having worked extensively in the Indian film industry, irrespective of the fact that he is creating songs for South films as well as the North, the 57-year-old opened up about how he has transcended the boundary created by languages in India. Shedding light on how he has recently finished working on a Malayalam film, he revealed that he is also working on Punjabi and Marathi projects. Rahman added, “I get the feel of it, get the energy that is very similar. You know a little bit of the culture and you have done your research. We try to get the assistance of the people who have the hold of the language. Like for Punjabi, there is Irshad Kamil and Imtiaz Ali.” The music composer went on to explain that in a way it helps him go more wilder rather than containing himself in a box.

For the unversed, the Imtiaz Ali directorial is set to be released on Netflix on 12th April 2024. Co-starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parneeti Chopra, the movie is a biographical film based on the life of late musician Amar Singh Chamkila, who was brutally killed at a young age because of his thought-provoking songs and lyrics. Fans have been eagerly waiting for the release of the movie, as they are loving the songs from the film.
